On My Way to Work

Our newest video series on YouTube is packed with cool locations, fun music, and engaging conversations with industry professionals. Every episode, host Mike Petrusky “justifies the commute” by bringing along an industry leader for an in-depth chat on the trends and tech affecting the facility and workplace management industries.

Season 2 has officially kicked off with the following new episodes.

Driving Innovation in the AEC Industry with Envision’s David Epps | Episode 1

Joining for the ride this episode is David Epps, Chief Technology Officer at Envision Construction. Petrusky keeps the conversation moving while Epps explains how technology in the construction industry can drive efficiency and productivity.

Epps shares how he started with 3D modeling and BIM but has now moved into software integrations. “Anything you can think of technology-wise…all software interfaces both with construction teams accounting all the different ecosystem type ideas…all kind of flow through me.”

And from his vantage point at the epicenter, he knows there’s more to do.

While technology tools are used during the construction process, this valuable digital data is not utilized post-construction, leading to a significant waste of resources.

“The point is like we spent all this time and effort to create this digital world that’s just meant for the project building cycle and then a lot of folks don’t actually do anything with it after that.”

Watch the episode to find out his solution and the role he thinks artificial intelligence is set to play industry wide.

Building the world’s first neighborhood work club with Switchyards’ Kayla Gottschalk | Episode 2

Petrusky shares a ride with Kayla Gottschalk, the Launch Lead at Switchyards, a neighborhood work club. They chat about the future of workspaces, the role and importance of facility management, and the Switchyards approach to creating neighborhood work clubs.

Gottschalk covers what she sees as the differences between coworking spaces and work clubs, which are a blend of coffee shops, hotel lobbies, and the opposite of what you’d see in traditional coworking spaces, making them a more relaxed and flexible place to work. “It’s a combination between all of our favorite places of coffee shops hotel lobbies and just literally the opposite of what you’d see in a We Work.”

Why the focus on facilities?

She feels there will always be a strong connection between location and company culture, and that means workplace teams are critical to the employee experience, which drives productivity. “When you lose them, you’re not only adding more risk to just how your buildings are being operated but you’re also going to be impacting your employee culture.”

Watch the episode to hear her insights into the connections between technology and younger professionals.

And while you’re there, make sure to catch up on all the episodes from season one.
